Data Science Team / Digital Transformation
Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) is at the forefront of leveraging artificial intelligence, deep learning, federated learning, and advanced NLP technologies to revolutionize the early detection of rare diseases. We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Data Scientist to join our dynamic team. This role will involve leading data science initiatives, developing innovative AI-driven diagnostic tools, and guiding the certification process to bring these solutions into clinical practice, with a significant impact on improving rare disease management.
Education and qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Data Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence or a related field.
- Extensive training in machine learning, deep learning, NLP, and big data analytics.
- Fluency in Catalan, Spanish, and English (business level).
Desired:
Doctorand or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
Specialized training in federated learning, NLP.
Specialized training in healthcare data standards such as OMOP or OpenEHR.
Certification in AI or data science-related fields.
Experience and knowledge:
Required:
- At least 4 years of professional experience or research in data science or AI.
- Proven track record in leading AI and machine learning projects, including experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), Large Language Models (LLMs), and NLP technologies.
- Strong expertise in programming languages such as Python, R, and experience with data science frameworks like Scikit-Learn.
- In-depth knowledge of data normalization and transformation.
- Ability to manage and mentor junior data scientists or lead data science teams.
- Experience in deploying AI-driven models, including NLP and LLMs, into production environments.
Desired:
- At least 4 years of experience in data science or AI, with a focus on healthcare or life sciences.
- In-depth knowledge of data normalization, EHR data integration, and clinical data analytics.
- Experience with the regulatory and certification process of AI solutions for clinical use, including CE marking or other relevant medical device certifications.
- Knowledge of data security and compliance requirements, especially in healthcare data (e.g., GDPR).
- Experience with advanced AI techniques, including neural networks, computer vision, and multi-modal data integration.
- Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals or contributions to AI research communities.
- Experience in deploying AI-driven models, including NLP and LLMs, into production environments in clinical settings.
- Experience with federated learning environments or distributed systems, supporting AI and deep learning capabilities.
- Experience with big data tools and frameworks, such as Apache Hadoop HDFS, Spark, Kafka, Cassandra, Storm or HBase and cloud-based solutions like AWS Glue, Google Cloud Dataflow, or Azure Data Factory.
- Familiarity with data pipeline architectures, including Lambda and Kappa architectures, and the ability to implement batch and real-time data processing techniques.
- Experience with Apache HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System, Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service), Google BigQuery, Apache Cassandra and/or MongoDB
- Experience with cloud-native data warehouses like Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Microsoft Azure SQL or Amazon Redshift.
- Experience with ETL tools like Apache Nifi, Talend, Informatica, Microsoft SSIS or AWS Glue.
- Proficiency in scripting and automation for infrastructure management using languages such as Bash or PowerShell.
- Knowledge of containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
Main responsibilities and duties:
- Lead the development and implementation of data pipelines to integrate and analyze large-scale healthcare datasets.
- Oversee the design, training, and validation of advanced deep learning models, including federated learning techniques and NLP/LLM technologies, within a secure and scalable infrastructure.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including clinicians, data engineers, and IT specialists, to drive the integration of AI algorithms into clinical workflows.
- Ensure compliance with data privacy and security standards while working with sensitive healthcare data.
- Guide the strategic direction of AI initiatives within the project, contributing to setting project milestones and achieving solution certification.
- Lead the certification process for AI-driven solutions, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards such as CE marking for medical devices.
- Mentor and support the growth of the data science team, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
- Actively contribute to scientific publications, conferences, and partnerships with academic and industry leaders
Labour conditions:
- Full-time position: 40 hours/week.
- Starting date: January 2025.
- Gross annual salary: Remuneration will depend on experience and skills. Salary ranges are consistent with our Collective Agreement pay scale.
- Contract: Open-ended contract linked to project. This proposal is contingent upon securing financing from the designated funder
